The Flagstaff Photography Center in collaboration with the Center for
Casas Grandes Studies presents a photography exhibition,
Rarámuri: The Enduring Tarahumara Indians,
featuring images by John Running and Sue Bennett and new works by Raechel
Running at the Casa Azul, 104 Calle Independencia, open by appointment. These

The Casa Azul is also a point of interest. Little changed since 1850 and with
many original furnishings, it has a large, semi-subterranean secret room built
to hide women and children when the Apaches attacked. Raechel Running is

MATA
ORTIZ, CHIH.: 12th annual
pottery contest
FONART, a federal agency, its state counterpart, Casa de las Artesanias,
Chihuahua City, and the Chihuahua state government will hold their annual
pottery competition in the old train station in Mata Ortiz: “XII Concurso de
Cerámica de Mata Ortiz, 2008.” Note that
FONART has sole right to buy of any or all of the pottery.
The competition is open to anyone in northwest Chihuahua. Judging will take place Friday,
May 16, and prizes will be awarded Saturday morning, beginning at 11am. Cash
prizes will be awarded in eight categories:
white polychrome; plain or decorated blackware; effigies; colored clays (red,
tan, cream, marbled etc), plain or decorated; miniatures not exceeding six
centimeters; innovative ideas in design, form, or color; sgraffito or openwork;
and non-traditional colors. The children’s category has been eliminated this
year, as it was in 2007. Contestants may enter up to three pieces made within
the previous six months, not entered in another competition, and not sold before
the event. Pieces will be accepted for registration from May 12th to
7pm on May 15th. Cash prizes will be awarded in the miniatures and
non-traditional-colors categories of $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000 pesos, and in
all other categories $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000 pesos. Best of Show will receive
$10,000 pesos, and the best winning piece submitted by winners of previous
competitions will receive a Prize of Excellence of $10,000 pesos. Pottery will
be removed following the awards ceremony and must not be left later than 5pm on
Sunday. Again, although in past years the
Museum
of Northern Cultures at
Paquimé offered to exhibit the winning pieces, no exhibition will be permitted.
Visitors can view the pots as they are being removed immediately following the
awards ceremony, but if the viewing follows the pattern of previous years, they
will not be identified as to maker. Note also that in previous years, no listing
of the winning artists was disclosed to the public; anyone wanting to know the
identity of the winners had to depend upon notes taken at the awards ceremony.
This is not an event designed to attract visitors or collectors, but to promote
production in the village for sales to FONART and
Casa de las Artesanías for their craft
outlets.

GRANDES, CHIH.:
Multicultural festival
The eighth
annual Festival Nueva Paquimé will
celebrate over a nine-day period the cultural diversity and achievements—Mormon,
Mexican, Spanish, Chinese, Indian, Mennonite—of
a broad geographical area of the American Southwest and the Mexican North known
in early Spanish times as the Gran
Chichimeca. An incomplete sampling of events would
include a parade celebrating the region’s diverse cultures; a bi-national
painting competition entitled this year
Cosecha de Culturas (harvest of cultures); a evening gathering of poets; an
evening of rediscovery of their origins for Mexican-Americans;
a charreada, or women’s
horsemanship event; children’s workshops, theater, and story-telling; rock
concerts; a gathering of Indians from various parts of the Gran Chichimeca; and
callejoneadas, or processions through Casas Grandes (Pueblo
Viejo) with singers and a keg of sotol on a burro, punctuated by
historical skits and reenactments. Since the festival is not concentrated like a
carnival or a fair but is dispersed over several different towns and different
days, it is not a single event someone might come from a distance to attend. But
it makes mid-July a good time to visit Casas Grandes for the wide choice of
cultural events happening in the area. For a program and other information,
