MATA ORTIZ, CHIH.: 13th Annual Gathering of Traders
The yearly Gathering of Traders & Friends of Mata Ortiz includes by
invitation all members of the Mata Ortiz ‘extended family.’ The original intent,
to foster community and communication among traders, soon expanded to include
everyone from either side of the border having a direct and significant
involvement with the village, whether artist, scholar, collector, student,
museum person, trader, gallery owner, tour guide, writer, or simply friend. The
program includes speakers on topics of interest followed by informal discussion
of matters relating to the economic health of the village. This year’s Gathering
will helped celebrate the centennial of the village, the hundred years since Dr.
Fred Stark Pearson purchased the first parcel that eventually became the town of
Mata Ortiz. A Friday evening reception was followed by an all-day program
Saturday including an evening Fiesta and, on Sunday morning, brunch with Spencer
and Emi MacCallum in Casas Grandes (Pueblo Viejo). For information, contact the Gathering coordinator
in Mexico, Diana Acosta (Cell 011-52-636-103-6004,
