DRAGOON, AZ: Exhibit opening, pottery-making demonstrations, lecture, workshop
The Amerind Foundation, 15 miles east of Benson, Arizona (Exit 318 from Interstate 10) will inaugurate with a weekend pottery event its new exhibit, The Potters of Mata Ortiz: Inspired by the Past—Creating Traditions for the Future (see under “Exhibitions,” above). The event will begin Friday evening with a potluck by the Amerind staff to welcome the artists.
Plan to make a day of it at the Amerind on Saturday! From 10-12 and 1-5 p.m., two of Mata Ortiz’ more noted potters, the brothers Manuel (“Manolo”) and Armando Rodríguez, assisted by Manolo’s wife, Olga, and children, Manuel Jr. and Berenice, will demonstrate the unique Mata Ortiz methods of hand building, burnishing, painting, and outdoor firing of pottery (firing is scheduled for about 4 p.m.). This will be a rare opportunity, especially, to meet Manolo Rodríguez, one of the more acclaimed artists of the village. Noted for his original directions in painting, he was the first to make a decisive break from the classicism of Juan Quezada. Throughout the day, the family will exhibit examples of their work and that of other Mata Ortiz artists. All pieces will be for sale.
Twice during the day, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Spencer MacCallum will speak and show slides and answer questions about the beginning years of the Mata Ortiz art movement. Collectors of either prehistoric Casas Grandes or contemporary Mata Ortiz pottery are encouraged to bring pieces for authentication or identification. Those not familiar with the Amerind’s anthropology and fine-art museums, beautifully architected and set in a striking desert rock formation, have a treat in store. It was the Amerind Foundation under Dr. Charles Di Peso that undertook the archaeological excavations of Paquimé in 1959-1962. Lunch of Mexican cuisine will be available from a food vendor.
The following day, Sunday, 10-5 p.m., the Rodríguez family will conduct a pottery-making workshop for all ages and skill levels. Berenice, Manolo’s daughter, age 9, will teach children. Each attendee will make a pot, learning hand-forming by the single-coil method. Each will be provided an unfired pot for learning surface preparation by sanding and stone burnishing, painting with a brush of human hair they will make themselves, and finally, conditions permitting, open-air firing in dried cow chips. Tuition for the adult workshop, limited to 15 persons, will be $85 for members and will include lunch. For $30 additional, anyone can become a member. The children’s workshop, limited to six, will be free.
Berenice, Manolo’s daughter, age 10, will teach children.
